Letter from The Mayor

June 2021

Update from the Mayor,

Dear Swedesboro Neighbor,

There is so much going on in town that I could fill this newsletter, but my overriding message to you right now is relief that we are starting to get back to some semblance of our normal lives and equally important I want to Thank You for all that you did to keep yourselves and your neighbors safe during the miserable year we have all endured.  We in no way escaped the pandemic unscathed, but by all accounts, we as a community have taken the threat seriously and we took the necessary precautions to reduce the risks.  Like many of you, I have lost good friends to COVID and have a number of friends who tested positive but survived.  I hope you have taken the opportunity to get vaccinated so we can truly put this behind us as we move into the summer season and enjoy time with friends and family.

I’m happy to report that no Borough Hall employees have gotten sick.  Our decision to reduce access to Borough Hall and hold all meetings virtually has paid off and thanks to our amazing Borough staff we have been able to maintain all operations without any significant problems.  I want to thank our team for their flexibility and dedication.

Our Public Works Department does not have the ability to work remotely and they have been real heroes by coming in each day to keep the drinking water flowing, the wastewater treatment plant operating, plowing our streets and taking care of all the things that we sometimes take for granted.  Our team took the precautions that were needed to protect them and their families while continuing to complete their essential duties.  As I ask every year – If you see any of the Public Works or Borough Hall staff out and about, please give them a wave and a thank you to let them know that we appreciate what they are doing for us.

We are going full steam ahead with our upcoming summer and fall events.  By now you will have received a flyer in the recent edition of the New Town Press that includes the dates for all of our events – such as the “Food Truck Festival” and “Dancing in the Park” concerts.  We are going to continue to combine these two events and hold them at the Swedesboro Auction Park since it worked out so well last year.  The plans for Swedesboro Day and the Christmas Parade are also well underway.

COVID had a huge impact on our major projects last year but we’re still moving forward and this should be a very busy summer in Swedesboro.  We are in the beginning stages of the tie-in to the Gloucester County sewer system and eliminating our outdated sewage treatment plant.  The project to reline or replace thousands of feet of sewer pipe is scheduled to get started in the near future.  As a reminder, we need all residents to remove any sump or gutter discharges to the sewer system as part of this project to reduce the flow (and cost) to the county plant.

I want to welcome Paul Taylor to our Public Works Department.  Paul has stepped right into the job and added some excellent experience to the team.

Please continue to stay safe and let’s get ready for a normal summer of fun and family time here in Swedesboro.

Tom

Welcome to Swedesboro,
On behalf of Borough Council, our Administrative Staff and our Public Works employees it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Historic Town of Swedesboro.

Settled in 1638, Swedesboro is a town rich in history, but focused intensely on our future. Our town has undergone a transformation over the last 8 years and we truly believe that “This is the Place…and Now is the Time”. Our Borough Website is designed to provide our residents, visitors, business owners and potential business owners with the information they need to fully appreciate all that Swedesboro has to offer.

I believe the quality of life in Swedesboro ranks the highest in Southern New Jersey and I am pleased that you have chosen our town as a place to live, start a business or visit. We have a great school system, a vibrant, recently renovated and expanded library and a downtown business district that is exploding with exciting new restaurants and shops. Lake Narriticon Park, also known as Swedesboro Lake, is another beautiful asset in our town. Two state-of-the-art dock systems have been installed. One is a kayak/canoe launching dock and the other is a fishing dock, complete with benches and rod holders. With our historic landmarks, tree lined neighborhoods and Lake Narriticon you will discover that this is truly a community, not just a place where people live.

We have a broad range of year-round activities for residents and visitors. “Blues Knite” in April, the “Outdoor Living and Garden Show” in May, Swedesboro Day, Dragon 5K Run and Car Show in September, the “Olde Kings Jazz Festival” in October, the “Christmas Parade” in November and our summer concert series “Dancing in The Streets”.

As Swedesboro maneuvers into the 21st Century, this former agricultural town is moving ahead with a transformation to a modern suburban town that respects our past while embracing the challenge of preparing for the future.

Please enjoy our website and let us know if we can make it better. As Mayor, I welcome you to our town and invite you to discover the many great things Swedesboro has to offer.

Sincerely,
Thomas Fromm
Mayor of Swedesboro
