Letters from The Mayor:March 3,2008

Dear Swedesboro Residents:

I am thrilled to announce that Swedesboro has signed on to the exciting RecycleBank program in order to improve our town’s recycling and reduce our trash disposal costs.
RecycleBank provides a single-stream, incentive based recycling program. Single stream recycling means there is no need to separate paper from aluminum, glass and plastic. All recycled materials are placed in a blue cart that will be provided at no additional cost to residents. As part of the collection cycle, the cart is weighed as it is being emptied. “RecycleBank Points” are earned based on the amount that we recycle and can be used at local and national retailers. Some of the participating local businesses include Mugs, Sweetsboro Pastry, Petals and Paints, Swedes Inn, One More Time, Epiphany, Angela’s Accents, Hollywood Grooming and Pat’s Pizza. You can check out a more complete list of participating businesses at this web site – http://www.recyclebank.com/local_vendors.cfm.

RecycleBank will be sending out a welcome kit to all of us shortly, please take the time to read about how the program works. In order to enjoy the benefits of the incentive program we will need to register with RecycleBank. We will then be able to access our account over the Internet or by telephone to redeem our “RecycleBank Points”. Please be sure to register when the packet arrives.

Diverting materials from the regular trash into the recycling stream will reduce our cost for trash disposal and this will have a positive impact on our taxes. This really is a positive initiative. We get to put all of our recyclables in one easy to use receptacle, get rewarded for doing the right thing, and we can support our local businesses in the process. The town saves money and we all contribute to helping the environment by reducing landfill waste. I am very proud that we are taking this step, and I really hope you will embrace the program.

Your RecycleBank cart will be delivered sometime during the week of March 17th and the first full week of collections will begin the week of March 24th. Your trash and recycling collection day will not change. If you would like to return your old recycling bin, please put it out EMPTY by the curb on your regular trash day. We will gladly remove it for you.

I have heard nothing but rave reviews about the RecycleBank program from our friends in Woolwich and Clayton. Recycling rates have skyrocketed in both towns. I remain totally committed to trying new and innovative ideas that will continue our progress in Swedesboro and as always I encourage you to let us know about anything we can do better or smarter – e-mail me at twfromm@yahoo.com.

Sincerely,
Thomas W. Fromm
Mayor of Swedesboro
